If you don't have time to learn Star Stitch at the moment, pin it HERE. And if you'd like to keep in the loop, like Stuck with Ewe on Facebook.
Materials:
- Yarn in any weight (I used Peaches & Cream cotton)
- Crochet hook in a matching size (I used an I/5.5mm)
Notes:
- I began with a row of hdc versus a chain. In my opinion, it's easier to work the stars into hdcs than chains. You can always substitute a chain if that's what you prefer.
- Each row begins with a Beginning star (beg star), which is different from the rest of the stars.
- Beg star is worked over 3 stitches plus a chain 3.
- Other stars are worked over previous star plus 2 new stitches.
- This tutorial shows you how to work star stitch in rows, with every other row being hdc. If you'd like to work only stars, I recommend THIS tutorial by Moogly.
Beginning Star:
Chain 3.
Insert hook into the 2nd chain from hook and pull up a loop.
Repeat in the next chain. (3 loops on hook)
Insert hook into the first st and pull up a loop. (4 loops on hook)
Insert hook into the next st and pull up a loop. (5 loops on hook)
Repeat the last step again. (6 loops on hook)
Yarnover and pull through all 6 loops.
Chain 1. Beg star is done!
All Other Stars:
Insert hook into center (the ch-1) of previous star and pull up a loop.
(2 loops on hook)
Insert hook under last "arm" of previous star and pull up a loop.
(3 loops on hook)
Insert hook in the same st as previous star ended and pull up a loop.
(4 loops on hook)
Insert hook in next st and pull up a loop. (5 loops)
Repeat in next st. (6 loops on hook)
Yarnover and pull through all 6 loops.
Chain 1. Star is finished!
Repeat the stars across, with a hdc in the last st.
Hdc rows:
Hdc in the first st. Put 2 hdc in the center of each star. At the end of the row, hdc under the first yarnover of the beg star.

Star stitches (especially with hdc rows between) tend to have soft, gap-y-sides; I usually combat this by hdc around the entire piece once finished.
Phew! You've made it through the first rows of star stitch, and I've made it through my first photo tutorial. (I think we both deserve a round of applause!) I hope that you enjoyed this and found it helpful! If you did, let me know in the comments below, along with any other tutorials you'd like to see; I hope this is the first of many.
